Q1: Briefly identify 2 common uses of Twitter amongst its high user base.
ReplyDeleteTwitter is commonly used as a platform for the reveal of information digitally. If privacy setting is not being set, information can be seen by anybody. It is also instant, which once the piece of information is being posted, the public can read it immediately without any time lack.
Many top celebrities nowadays like to use twitter as a form of social media which they can then communicate and interact with other celebrities or even their fans. As celebrities are usually very busy, twitter is in a form of text message which they can access to anywhere as long as there is internet available. As for the fans side, they of course want to know as much information about their idols as possible, and twitter allows them to update their information anytime. They also believe that posting on twitter is form that they are able to communicate without their idol directly.

As Twitter is so advance, almost all types of information can be found on it. This may end up as a burden which results in information overload.
Twitter is also very addictive because people has the intention to update themselves by looking at what are the latest ‘tweets’ posted either by their friends or their idols. This temptation may sometimes become a burden to some people as they could not concentrate on their work and got distracted every now and then.
Twitter is a social media that without privacy settings, whatever the user post can be seen by anybody. Thus privacy becomes a very big issue for some people. They could be getting stalk by strangers online without themselves knowing. Also because it is online, some people thought that they may not pay the responsibility for whatever they posted online, and thus they behaves irresponsibility that lead them to big troubles.

Personally, I felt that twitter is only suitable to be used as tool to interact or keep in touch with friends. It is can be used as a form of entertainment, but not suitable when comes to serious stuff like school work. This is because some school related documents is not suitable to reveal to the entire public, yet it is difficult to control who will view it on twitter. Thus I think that twitter can be used for the alumni to keep in touch with their junior and lecturers, or even surveys regarding school projects, but not for school work like submitting of reports and assignments, or even posting blog comments.

Q1: Nowadays many celebrities idols uses twitter to interact with their friends and fans. As everyone knows that celebrities and idols are much more busier than us, twitter is in a form of text only thus so long as there is internet connection available, they can easily access twitter to tweet.

It is because twitter is a platform that provide users with instant updates of what their followers tweeted. Some users actually created twitter to follow thier idols as they want to check on what their idols are actually doing and have update on when is thier next album or event so that they as a fan can prepare and support their favourite idol. Another disadvantage of twitter is that by default, your profile is viewable in public, thus everyone can see what you have tweeted which don't protect your privacy.
Q3: The potential use of twitter in our polytechnic or a college is most probably to use it as a platform for seniors, juniors, alumni, staffs to keep in touch with one another. Twitter is definitely not a suitable platform for schools to post important information to staffs and students as it will be revealed to the entire world, even if kept private, the admin of the twitter account is 100% busy as the admin have to check every follower profile and see if it matches any student or staff in the college. thus twitter is best for making new friends and bonding not for important stuffs or works.
Twitter is a common platform of social media that celebrities and most teenagers use nowadays. It is an instant-post blog where u can view the tweets immediately right after you post. It is unlike a common blog where it is super long and detailed and takes time or where the access to the site or blog is complicated. Twitter is made very simple and to a limit of 140 words. This is very useful as people will be able to post multiple short tweets right after one another or not and view it instantly. One of the most common use is that Most teens will actually tweet what they are doing , their actions, thoughts , feelings, etc. Hence, all the tweets are the current or latest updated news. People will also use it as a form of chatting or interacting with friends or followers. They will actually check up what their friends tweet currently maybe from few hours or even that few minutes and seconds at that time frame they are at and reply to them. Another common use is that people use twitter to discover about the current trend and news around your country or worldwide which is to view the latest on what everyone is talking about. ReplyDeleteThe disadvantages of twitter is that there is not much privacy to a user. There is nothing much you can do to control private and confidential issues. Without privacy settings, people can randomly follow you and whatever you tweet can be shown to everyone.There are certain privacy settings however only to certain extent. You can private your tweets and prevent people from viewing it however only to people whom they do not follow you. People who follow you are still able to view it. The benefit is that random people who you do not know are unable to follow you as they like and stalk you by reading your tweets and they require your permission to accept them. You can control your followers and prevent random people from viewing information about your account. Because of such common uses of twitter, twitter can be addictive and can harm people and affect them by getting distracted and being unable to focus and balance on their work. Another one is since it is online, people will post whatever they want including negative stuff which might harm people and not taking responsibility for it.
Twitter in polytechnics or college can most probably serve as a potential use only by using it to keep in touch or interact with friends,staff, other people whom they know in the poly out of their class such as certain clubs or ccas.
It will be hard to use twitter as a platform to post school related stuff or information as it will most probably spread to the entire world , leading to certain circumstances, and also it will be hard to control who will only be
able to view it. Even with privacy settings , as it is still a social media platform , information will still be able to leak out easily.

Twitter maybe popularity to many, however it can be troublesome for some new user initially due to the setting up of their twitter account. - Profile Designs, Bio & getting followed and following of other. Other issues such as, 1) It is not an ideal social media platform for those who are going to post long essay, links or/and images as it there is a limited word count you could tweet. 2) Twitter users abusing their twitter account by excessive over-tweeting or re-tweets of things resulting their follower homepage flooding with their tweets.

Potential uses of Twitter in Schools are beneficial for teachers and students due to the fact that it allow real-time interaction between teachers and students. One example would be, teacher could ask an evaluation from their students of their understanding of a topic, so to better improvise their teaching materials and methods.

As report had shown that there are 6000 tweets per second. Thus this shows that there are a lot of information broadcasted on twitter , thus some of the tweet is not reliable.

Twitter can be use for broadcasting homework , projects, whereby the lecture tweets the homework for the day, thus this allows the students to keep track of homework and thus it also serves as a reminder for the student to do the homework.

In order to be connected or to communicate with their friends or celebrities, users just need to follow their account to know all their latest updates on Twitter.

Such as Today, Channel New Asia, DBS bank etc, users who followed them were able to know the latest news or information that was published by them and because Twitter uses the Real-time system, therefore the news through twitter is constantly updated and users are able to get all their latest news in their Twitter feed. -140 word limit: Twitter only allowing users to post maximum up to 140 words, unlike some other social media, e.g. Facebook, Instagram etc. Users may experience difficulties as they can only post up to 140 words and they may need to rephrase their sentences to make it shorter if they have exceeded the limitation, which causes a lot of inconvenience to the user and inconvenience for the readers to read as well. Due to the limitation, user must express their thoughts in a clear and concise manner to fit into the 140 word limitation.
-Privacy setting: Twitter is lack of privacy as compared to Facebook. In Twitter, once the user post/published something, everyone who followed were able to see/view instantly and the user are not able to do any customization of the post that they had posted. Whereas on Facebook, users are able to customize their setting and are in control of people from viewing the post, it can also allow certain people to view it.
-Addiction: Twitter is a platform that allows everyone who used Twitter to be connected with each other, be it with their own friends, or even a celebrity. It can be very addictive as Twitter provides instant and latest updates of information of what their friends or their followers tweeted. Due to the instant updates, user can be easily distracted as they want to know all the latest information about what their friends/followers tweeted and users may feel the need of them updating on Twitter.

Users/students can follow their college's twitter to keep in touch with everyone who had followed and also able to get the latest information about their school instantly whenever there is an update on the school, users get to know what is happening in the next seconds/minute. However, Twitter is not a platform for colleges to post or release confidential information or school relating stuff online which may expose to the entire world who uses Twitter and it will definitely have difficulties controlling the right target group of people who should not be viewing it.

Another common use of Twitter is the search feature where users are able to find out about the latest buzz about their favourite celebrities or football team.

Another disadvantage is that many people tweet constantly around the world. If you see a particular tweet that appeared a few days ago and you want to use it, it is difficult to find it as it will be buried by all the new tweets that appear daily.

Its also a great way for family and friends, even those halfway across the world to keep connected to your daily life. Another main use for keeping up with the news. By searching trending hashtags, you are able to keep up with what's trending on the internet from #PrayforMH370 the mysterious flight MH370 that was disappeared to #TeamPW the tragic car accident of the actor, Paul Walker from Fast and Furious to #Worldcup to see which team is currently winning or arguing with people around the world whether or not foul play was made in the World Cup. It’s like facebook, but shorter, sweeter and straight to the point.

As a tweet in twitter can be short to read however when multiplied by the number of users a single account can follow, it can really make information that are important to the user, lost in a sea of tweets. This can be a disadvantage or a burden to some people as it can be an overload or abundance of information. Where there are too many streams of information feeding the user at once. Another disadvantage to twitter is because a twitter account is so easily created that anyone and everyone can create one, and start following people they like. So you never know who is really behind the account that is following you which can spark privacy concerns or questioning of the people who are following you are actually paying any attention to what you want to convey.

Most certainly Twitter can be used in a wide range of situations including polytechnics and other tertiary institutions. Potential uses of Twitter within such environments are getting direct feedback from students studying in the respective tertiary institutions. Another potential use of Twitter within such environments is for students and lecturers to be able to connect with each other like a campus social network. So they can easily and quickly pop burning questions to their lecturers within a short limited 140 character message.

Twitter is also a useful form of micro-blogging where we let followers know our thoughts and feelings through tweets and pictures we post online in a 140 character tweet. Another common use is to be the first to be updated with news in real-time. Trending hashtags enables the user to know what is happening now despite the fact that the situation is occurring at the other end of the world in a different country.

Some are unable to adjust to the rapid change in the layout of twitter and how it has changed over the years. For example, some are unable to adapt to the setup of the page and the use of symbols and hashtags and therefore find it complicated to use. Twitter also limits to only 140 characters inclusive of symbols, hashtags and whatnot. Some may find this frustrating as they may want to type a post of more than 140 characters.
Another disadvantage is that twitter is highly addictive and takes up our precious time. One may get addicted to twitter in the long run and therefore find it difficult to focus on their task.
Privacy is also an issue. We are unable to private our tweets from those that follow our account and therefore we may be cyberstalked by strangers we do not know.

Twitter's potential use at our polytechnic or a college is mainly to meet new people and keep in contact with friends, staff or colleagues as it is a convenient way to connect with one another and be informed about what is happening around school, and also get notified about the latest information.
However, in terms of educational purposes, I feel that twitter is not a suitable platform for learning as we may get side-tracked easily and also due to privacy reasons.

The disadvantages of twitter is that if you post something very personal on twitter, the whole world would be able to see your post and it would cause a lot of trouble. Twitter's potential uses at our polytechnic is that we would be able to get information about our school first hand through the social media and we would know that the source is reliable as the person giving the information is from our school.

Twitter makes the world more connected with one another. For example, when one tweets a message, His/Her friends are able to see the message when he/she refresh the twitter page which most of the users will do it very frequently. People are able to know what their friends are doing, what are the interesting things that are happening around them. Also, if you happen to follow Celebrities across the world, you are able to know what more personal stuffs about them like when is their birthday, their age, family etc. Or maybe stuffs like when and where are their concert going to be held in. Twitter only allows the user to write a tweet of 140 words or lesser. Also, twitter does not have privacy settings like other social media like facebook. That means that when one tweets a message, people are going to see it. This is not a good thing because if you are a frequent twitter user that always give out their location in twitter, people will know where you are and what you are doing. Stalkers will be able to stalk you and that may be pretty dangerous. This may invade your privacy.

But where else facebook can block a certain people from viewing your post. Twitter can have potential uses at polytechnic or college. They can get students to follow them on their page and they could update news or important information on their page. This would be a very fast update to student who are twitter users. Sending email might be slower then updating twitter and it is much easier. ReplyDelete1st common uses are for celebrities or big companies. They used twitter to reveal important information that is needed for the customers. For example, there is a temporary shut down in singtel for an hour and there will be no phone service for an hour. They can use twitter to make a small post about this shut down and people using twitter will then be notified.
2nd common uses for twitter are youths like us. We used twitter to express ourselves and the activities that we are doing. For example, i'm going to USS. I'm going to tweet about how excited i am and what i'm going to do next. This are small stuffs that can express out emotions digitally and allows us to stay socially connected with other people digitally.
